Thousands of visitors enjoy a scene worthy of royalty, complete with wine picnics on the grass, hot and cool jazz and blues bands, and the view of the famous Snake River winding through the valley below.
Like other world wine regions that depend on the presence of lakes or rivers, Idaho vineyards are planted around the Snake River which runs through the southern part of the Gem State.
The flow of air over moving water draws off heat in the summer and spreads a moderating humidity in the winter.
Even so, heavy frosts can occasionally freeze the vines to the ground.
When this happens, the grapes must grow back from their roots, so Ste. Chapelle and other Idaho vines are pure varietals rather than grafts on standard rootstocks.
